WAYLON JENNINGS

Recorded on April 1, 1989 this performance by Waylon Jennings was no April Fools joke. This was the "new" Waylon, both personally and professionally. He had kicked a 20-year drug habit, split with RCA and signed a new deal with MCA Records. He discovered a passion for songwriting, teamed with legendary producer Jimmy Bowen, and produced some of the best work of his 30-year-plus career. He credited his wife and soul mate, Jessi Colter, for much of his inspiration. This was Waylon¹s second trip to the ACL stage, but the one that best captures the raw edge and driving urgency that pushed country music way past its Nashville boundaries starting in the mid-1970¹s. He was described as the leader of the Country "Outlaw" movement, which he often dismissed as just another marketing scam, but there¹s no denying that he turned the music on its head and took it way beyond its rural southern roots. This West Texas boy who worked as a DJ and started his own band at 14, then later played with Buddy Holly, left an indelible mark on the music he loved. He was a class act, this man called Hoss.

We're talkin' TEX-MEX ROCK 'N ROLL! In this show from January 21, 1981, Doug Sahm (a/k/a Sir Doug) reunites with original band members Augie Meyers and Johnny Perez, along with the legendary Alvin Crow on guitar and Speedy Sparks on bass for a no-holds-barred, rip-snortin' Texas rock 'n roll revival. Back in the day, the Sir Douglas Quintet was Texas' answer to the British invasion. With the arrival of the Beatles, Sir Doug & Co. saw their chance to break out the rough, Chicano-influenced rock they had been playing in the joints around San Antonio. They donned English-looking suits and hit the charts with "She's About a Mover" in 1965. Nobody was quite sure where they came from, but they rode the English-pop wave to fame. There's something contagious about Augie's cheesy, pumping Vox organ chords and Sir Doug's chang-a-chang rhythm guitar over Johnny's Mexican drumming style, drenched in psychedelia, that stood out from everything else at the time. And it still does today. You may not be able to sit down through "She's About a Mover", or "Mendocino", but that's OK. Doug is no longer with us, but you can be sure that somewhere he's still kickin' out the jams.

Call it serendipity or genius, but when four legends of Texas music pooled their talents in December 1989, a new sound was born: the Texas Tornados. The band was new but its members were no strangers to center stage. Freddy Fender was a mega-star with his hits 'Wasted Days and Wasted Nights' and 'Before the Next Teardrop Falls.' Doug Sahm and Augie Meyers formed the The Sir Douglas Quintet in San Antonio in the mid-60's, combining psychedelia, Gulf Coast blues, big band pop and spicy conjunto in a sound that shook up the pop charts with 'She's About a Mover.' Then there's Flaco Jimenez who, along with his father and brother used their accordions to invent their own music genre; mixing up Mexican NorteÃ±o music with German/Czech polkas and waltzes. Together, this 'Tex-Mex Revue' created a raucous, infectious, danceable sound that ranks as an all-time Austin City Limits® favorite. This show is an unforgettable tribute to the late Doug Sahm as a larger-than life Texas icon.
